Leading Change Through Influence
Back in 2018, CJ Backlund, MS, CIH, CSP, attended the AIHA Leadership Workshop and noticed a gap during a session using and discussing data from the Clifton StrengthsTM Finder tool. The results clearly pointed to “influencing” as an opportunity for growth for the IH community. Sure, we’re good at exercising our inner data geek and strategizing, but when the rubber meets the road for change, we struggle or walk away with a less-than-we-had-imagined solution or product.
PDC 706: Influencer Training® The New Science of Leading Change will be facilitated by two Platinum Level Vital Smarts instructors: Backlund and health physicist, Brian Thomson, MS. They come with loads of experience at multiple national laboratories and private industry. CJ and Brian have been facilitating this course for years at Sandia National Labs, often to sold out sessions with audiences that include engineers, scientists, IHs, and environmental health and safety (EHS) professional. Students routinely provide feedback that the class was one of the best classes they have ever taken.
Influencer Training® combines compelling videos and extensive class exercise to give you the skills needed to effectively manage behaviors and drive the change you need. Brian and CJ enhance the learning by sharing their personal EHS stories. You’ll learn why influence is one of the most powerful and important capacities you possess. You’ll learn to identify vital behaviors to leverage the greatest amount of change through six sources of influence. The skills learned and practiced in the course are the same influencer methods used to essentially eradicate a terrible disease through behaviors alone. How? You’ll have to attend the course to find out more!
Being an effective influencer is not an inborn quality but rather something we can all learn through deliberate practice. To get the most out of this course, registrants will bring their case study to work throughout the two days of the class and walk away with an actionable plan. We’ll send each registrant an Influencer Class Participant Preparation Sheet to get you started thinking about your specific Influencer challenge to better ensure your time in class is as productive as possible.
And the best case for this class is value-added. Not only do you get instructors that understand ES&H challenges that would benefit from better influence, but you’ll be surrounded by like-minded students. Since the early registration fee is $945 for members, this comes at a substantial costs savings (>40%) over the public enrollment course fee outside of AIHce EXP, which totals more than $1,500.
In addition to the Influencer Toolkit, each student will receive a copy of the New York Times Bestseller, “Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change, Second Edition,” authored by the founders of Vital Smarts. According to Deborah Norville, anchor of Inside Edition and bestselling author: “If you are truly motivated to make productive changes in your life, don't put down this book until you reach the last page. Whether dealing with a recalcitrant teen, doggedly resistant co-workers, or a personal frustration that 'no one ever wants to hear my view,' Influencer can help guide in making the changes that put you in the driver's seat."
